About the Sport of Paintball
Played in over 80 countries, Paintball is a ever changing, ever expanding sport. Originally referred to as “Survival Games”, “Wargames”, and “Skirmish”, Paintball has been played for over 25 years, with the first documented game played in 1981 on 100 acres in New Hampshire.
Paintball has several different aspects, including Speedball, Recball, and Scenario Play. Speedball is the fastest growing side of the sport, and regarded as the most popular. Generally played within an enclosed area in the neighborhood of 100ft x 200ft, Speedball is just as the name suggests, a fast paced, team oriented game usually lasting 7 minutes or less, with the object being to completely eliminate by shooting, or marking, the other team and/or hanging a flag.
Recball, or Woodsball, is generally played on a much larger field with more bunkers. The time constraints are also considerably larger, with games lasting up to 45 minutes. This is the starting point for 95% of the people playing Paintball now, and is the closest to the first game ever played. Again, the object is to completely eliminate the opposing team.
Scenario Play is, for all intensive purposes, a large Recball game. This form of Paintball has been played since 1985, and is played everywhere from abandoned military housing to cattle ranches. Scenarios usually last 24hrs, but some producers have moved to a 48hr format. The object of a Scenario is to complete missions loosely based on the event's storyline, and includes props, costumes, and role play.
